Spotlight on Certified Nurse Midwives:

What is a Certified Nurse Midwife?

Certified Nurse Midwives (C.N.M.s) are educated in both the field of nursing and midwifery and hold master's degrees.  They are certified with the American Midwifery Certification Board.  Certified Nurse Midwives have been licensed to provide care in pregnancy and women's health in Utah since the mid 1960's.  They are committed to a philosophy of meeting a woman's individual needs, providing education, and involving them in their own care.

Certified Nurse Midwives strive to offer child birth experiences that are emotionally satisfying and family-centered.  Their deliveries take place in the hospital and they can provide anesthesia or assist in natural childbirth, according to the wishes of the woman.  They remain with the woman throughout labor and are highly trained to recognize problems that might require a doctor's attention.  They can also provide care and counseling after the birth.

For the woman who is not pregnant, a Certified Nurse Midwife can perform yearly physical examinations, provide primary care, discuss illness prevention, order and interpret laboratory tests and prescribe medication as necessary.  They are focused on meeting women's physical and psychological needs.
